The Lawyers for Democracy organisation says people are voluntarily standing up against the incorrect policies of the government.
Speaking during a media briefing in Kandy Senior Attorney Lal Wijenayake said such a situation has not arisen in the past.
Wijenayake said the government suppresses public opposition, when it has no solutions to issues.
He noted at present the public including farmers and labourers have voluntarily taken to the streets, to raise their concerns.
He said in the past, protests were organized by trade unions or other organizations.
Wijenayake however said at present the public has stood up against the government’s policies, as they are unable to bear the brunt.
He claimed in response the government is suppressing individuals who speak up, adding that corruption is the main cause for the prevailing crisis.
He added the public has no faith in the leaders as a result of corruption.
Commenting on the Criminal Investigation Department recording statements from several journalists over the alleged garlic scam at Lanka Sathosa, Lal Wijenayake said it is an attempt to oppress journalists who oppose fraud and corruption.
Wijenayake further said it is a serious incident.
He claimed no other country would summon the heads of three leading newspapers to the Criminal Investigation Department.
Wijenayake said the newspapers had only brought the matter to light, adding however they were summoned in order to be intimidated.
