Minister of Transport Bandula Gunawardena says the public transport system will be revamped promptly as a solution to the fuel crisis.
Speaking at a discussion at the Sri Lanka Railways Headquarters, the Minister said the Railways Departments must renovate train compartments that are not in use and include them for operations.
He added such compartments should be put into operation within a short time period.
Minister Bandula Gunawardena said the railway system played an integral part when Sri Lanka transitioned from a self-sustainable economy to an export centric plantations economy.
He noted the transportation of crops and other items for export to ports was historically done through trains.
Minister Bandula Gunawardena said he will endeavour to establish a framework for a railway service that meets international standards.
