The All Island Canteen Owner’s Association says prices of parata and vadai have increased significantly.
Speaking to NewsRadio, President of the Association Asela Sampath said short eats are being sold the most at present.
He said a bottle of coconut oil is now Rs.900, while a kilogram of chicken is between Rs.950-1,000. Sampath said the price of an egg is Rs.33, a kilogram of dhal Rs.400, and a kilogram of sugar Rs.200.
Asela said the prices of ingredients to prepare short eats have increased by 500% driving the cost of production up.
Sampath added the increase in prices of food items was inevitable.
He stated the price of a chicken rice and curry increased to Rs.300, fish Rs.240, egg Rs.220, and vegetable rice and curry Rs.200.
Sampath noted the public is forced to switch to cheaper substitutes such as parata and vadai for between Rs.50-150, with the increase in prices of rice packets.
