Commander of the Army General Shavendra Silva says the public must act in an intelligent manner, at a time over 500 COVID-19 cases are being identified daily.
Speaking at the Army Hospital in Narahenpita, where Army officers were being administered the booster dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, the Army Commander said it is important to wear face masks and follow health guidelines, as there is a risk of new variants emerging.
The Army Commander said several variants entered the country in the past, despite various measures to prevent it.
He noted there is a risk of the number of infections increasing as well.
General Silva said lifting travel restrictions does not mean COVID-19 has been mitigated from the country.
He noted inter-provincial travel restrictions were lifted after several months, and several limitations were eased for the sake of the people.
He urged the public to adhere to health regulations.
