A discussion is set to take place between the Minister of Agriculture and the All Island Poultry Association pertaining to the issues that have arisen in the industry.
Speaking to NewsRadio, President of the Association Ajith Gunasekera said the production of chicken and eggs has dropped by 40 percent.
He said requests will be made during the talks to provide the necessary raw material in order to sustain the poultry industry.
He said corn, white rice, and other materials that are used as animal feed are scarce.
Gunasekera said farm owners are facing grave difficulties, while certain small and medium scale businesses are closing.
He noted that according to UNICEF, malnutrition in children will increase due to the lack of protein in meals.
Ajith Gunasekera urged the Agriculture Ministry to hold discussions with the Ministry of Finance, and through state and private banks to facilitate the import of raw material.
