Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekera says Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara thera informed investigative teams of a revelation that extremists were preparing an attack similar to the Easter Sunday attacks, by quoting sections of the Quran.
The Minister made this statement in response to a question raised in Parliament yesterday by Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahuman.
MP Rahuman questioned the measures taken regarding the revelations made recently by Gnanasara thera.
Parliamentarian Rahuman said Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara thera claimed he has information pertaining to efforts to carry out another terror attack that will impact national security.
MP Rahuman said the thera stated he has evidence and information regarding the responsible groups and claimed these groups are in possession of material that could be used to carry out the attacks.
MP Rahuman questioned as to whether Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara thera has been summoned before the Criminal Investigation Department to record a statement, what progress has been made regarding the claims and whether any individual or group has been apprehended based on the information.
In response Minister Weerasekera said, investigative teams obtained further details from Gnanasara thera, regarding the revelation.
The Minister said the government does not underestimate the details adding that investigations are underway.
Minister Weerasekera said statements have been recorded from Gnanasara thera while no arrests have been made thus far.
The Minister said when questioned, Gnanasara thera claimed that he made the statement regarding a sinhala translation of the Quran and that Muslims are influenced to carry out attacks due to certain articles.
Minister Weerasekera said no Muslim leader in recent times had refuted certain articles which have been translated from the Quran in relation to murder and conspiracies.
Minister Weerasekera said he is thankful to Gnanasara thera for revealing such information.
He said all efforts will be taken to prevent any attacks, and to arrest and rehabilitate any individual connected to such attempts.
