The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says a formal inquiry must be held into the transactions carried out by former Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture Udith K Jayasinghe, who was removed from office, which were national crimes.
Issuing a statement Parliamentarian Rohini Kumari Wijerathna said his financial crimes as a public servant cannot be concealed by removing him from office after causing huge losses to the country and leading to large-scale corruption.
It added he came to the Ministry of Agriculture due to a project to make money for companies from the concept of organic farming.
The SJB said the former Secretary of Agriculture was removed and two national crimes were committed during Jayasinghe’s term, through the nano-urea fertilizer and the Chinese fertilizer ship.
MP Wijerathna said it was a month since the ban on agrochemicals was lifted, but no agrochemicals have been imported so far due to the actions of Udith K Jayasinghe.
The MP said investigations must be carried out into the payment of USD 6.7 million for the Chinese fertilizer ship and the importation of 400% more nano urea from India.
In addition, she said there should be an immediate inquiry into large-scale transactions taking place in the Ministry of Agriculture and the importation of goods without tenders.
