The protest march organised by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya in Colombo is currently underway, headed by Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa.
Protesters are marching towards the Presidential Secretariat.
Speaking to media during the protest, Parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne said the prices of goods have skyrocketed adding a family cannot sustain on a monthly income of Rs.30,000-40,000.
He added the present situation prompted people to take to the streets.
The MP said the government came into power by misleading the public adding the prevalent crisis arose due to incorrect policies of the government.
MP Wickramaratne added the government failed to heed calls to follow correct policies and questioned whether the government understands the dire situation.
The MP claimed Sri Lanka is the only nation where the Head of State and the Minister of Finance has no knowledge of finances or the economy adding however it is common for the Prime Minister to not be aware of the financial and economic situation of the country.
The Parliamentarian further said Sri Lanka is the only nation where three members of same family hold these portfolios adding therefore the public demand for a change.
He said students are unable to attend school due to over 40,000 school vans facing the diesel shortage.
MP Wickramaratne said the prevailing situation needs to be changed and called on the government to change its policies or resign.
