The Opposition charges that prices of 20 essential food items have increased by 100% since the present government came into power.
Speaking during a media briefing Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka said as a result the public cannot bear the cost of living at present. He noted 1kg of Samba rice was Rs.88 in October 2019, and is now Rs.150, adding Nadu rice was Rs.94 and is now between Rs.110 and 120.
The MP added White raw rice was Rs.88 and is now Rs.105 while Red raw rice was Rs.85 and is now Rs.100.
MP Champika Ranawaka further said 1kg of sugar which was at Rs.100 in October 2019 is now between Rs.200 and 210. He claimed therefore it is clear that prices of essential food items have increased by 100% under the present administration.
MP Champika Ranawaka further said through a fake lockdown the spread of the coronavirus does not reduce, adding however that it will lead to the collapse of the economy.
He claimed it is clear that the country is still open as the government is not considering a scientific lockdown.
The MP said the opposition repeatedly claimed the number of COVID-19 patients and deaths cannot be reduced by imposing a lockdown for seven to eight days and not imposing the restrictions in a strict manner, as the virus has reached a critical state.
He added the decision to impose a lockdown should’ve been taken in July, and has now been imposed half-heartedly due to the public outcry.
