Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Nalin Bandara says the price of a pack of urea fertiliser imported by private firms will be close to Rs.10,000 due to the global situation.
Speaking during the Committee Stage Debate on the Budget, MP Bandara said a decision was reached to reverse the Gazette Notification banning chemical fertiliser issued by the Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage in May.
The Parliamentarian said the Gazette was not reserved thus far and questioned the Agriculture Minister if there were any hindrances.
He said fertilisers, pesticides herbicides and weedicides will not appear in the country as soon as the Gazette is reversed.
MP Bandara said the Minister claimed that 600,000 hectares of land had been cultivated for paddy farming adding however the entire area is lacking weedicides.
The MP questioned if farmers are able to get rid of weeds manually adding it will take 31 million working days to rid weeds in 600,000 hectares of land.
