The All Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association says the price of a loaf of bread may exceed Rs.100 due to the prevailing crisis situation.
Speaking during a media briefing Chairman NK Jayawardena said the gas shortage and increasing prices of goods may lead to an increase in prices of bread.
He noted around 1,000 bakeries across the country have closed temporarily at present adding the remaining bakeries only operate for five days a week.
Jayawardena said bakery owners are severely burdened at present and claimed if the situation continues for another week, all bakeries across the country will have to close.
He added 90 percent of bakery owners will be unable to operate the business as they are unable to repay their loans and called on the government to direct attention towards the matter.
