President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is expected to head to Singapore from the Maldives.
The Reuters News Agency quoted a senior government official as saying President Rajapaksa could send his resignation to the Speaker of House after landing in Singapore.
President Rajapaksa left Sri Lanka on a military jet, amid mass protests over the economic crisis early this morning (13).
The Sri Lanka Air Force confirmed that the President flew to the Maldives with his wife and two security officials.
A source has told the BBC that President Rajapaksa will not remain in the Maldives and intends to travel on to a third country.
In his absence, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been appointed as the acting President.
Meanwhile, former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, also left Sri Lanka early this morning and is said to be heading to the US.
