Chief Government Whip Minister Johnston Fernando says President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will not resign under any circumstances.
Speaking in Parliament this morning, Minister Johnston Fernando said there is no reason for the President to resign.
Following a heated exchange with opposition Members of Parliament, Minister Fernando said the President received the backing of 6.9 million voters during the last Presidential Election and therefore he will continue to function as the Head of State.
He said the government will continue to work to address the issues faced by the public at present.
Minister Johnston Fernando also requested all factions to support the programme of the government without resorting to violence.
He also noted that anyone can stage protests but no one should engage in violence.
The Minister stressed that all citizens should abide by the law and warned that they will not back down merely due to a protest launched by 20,000 to 50,000 persons.
