President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today engaged in a sudden inspection tour of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority this morning.
The Head of State’s visit was focused on directly with officials of the Sustainable Energy Authority to inquire into the possibility of using renewable sources such as water, solar and wind to generate power.
According to the ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’ policy statement, the government aims to utilise renewable energy for 70% of total power generation by 2030.
The programme also explores the possibility of short-term renewable energy sources contributing towards resolving the present energy crisis in the country.
The President’s Media Division said another purpose of the visit was to look into the delays in approving renewable energy projects that are pending.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa instructed officials to only take in to consideration national interests when implementing projects.
The President said the country has faced many setbacks over the years before the international community due to delays in projects that have been planned for the future.
President Rajapaksa said the law exists to curb corruption and malpractices and stressed that the law is not an obstacle in doing the right thing.
The President highlighted the need to remove barriers in foreign investment in the energy sector.
