Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa has written to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa seeking a Presidential pardon for former Member of Parliament Ranjan Ramanayake.
On the 12th of January, former MP Ramanayake was sentenced to a four-year rigorous prison sentence after being found guilty on contempt of court charges.
Ranjan Ramanayake lost his Parliamentary seat subsequently. He failed to overturn his sentence despite filing an appeal.
A number of factions had previously requested the President to pardon Ranjan Ramanayake who was one of the most popular actors in the country before entering active politics.
The opposition leader has also requested the President to consider the public sentiment and repeated calls made by religious leaders, attorneys, artists and other civil society group members and issue a Presidential pardon for former MP Ranjan Ramanayake. He is currently serving his sentence at the Angunakolapelessa prison.
