Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa has responded positively to a majority of the content in the government policy statement presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe today.
Speaking to media in Parliament subsequent to the ceremonious opening of the third session of the ninth Parliament this morning, MP Premadasa said when engaged in politics, words trump actions, that leads to a significant disparity.
He urged the President to ‘walk the talk’ with aspects of the policy statement while commending the content of the policy statement.
MP Premadasa said the most positive aspect was that the programme for an all-party government formation was included in the policy statement and the manner in which duties will be executed.
MP Premadasa said the proposal to form a party leaders council, public involvement in governance, and strengthening Oversight Committees are all favourable proposals.
Meanwhile, MP Mujibur Rahman said the policy statement by the President included aspects of the policies of the good governance government between 2015 and 2019 and commended the statement.
MP Mano Ganesan added in order to uplift the country, the national issue must be addressed first and foremost.
MP Ganesan said the speech highlighted the need to unite as Sri Lankans while divisions were not witnessed in the statement.
However, MP Ganesan said the content of the policy statement must be enforced.
Minister Manusha Nanayakkara claimed the policy statement was focused on nationalism and the future of the country, adding it is a positive for the future.
The Minister said the government’s policy statement will be accepted both internationally and locally.
