President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has issued directives to conduct a formal study into the state service with the aim of providing a quality and efficient service and to increase employee satisfaction.
The President made this observation at a special discussion at the President’s House yesterday on the role of the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs and Local Government and pertaining to accelerating home gardening.
The President highlighted the need to consolidate state institutions to provide a continuous service.
President Rajapaksa said decentralisation of key state institutions in Colombo to the provinces will reduce the number of public servants having to visit Colombo.
Discussions were also held on expediting disciplinary inquiries into public servants and obtaining maximum services through them.
The Ministries of Public Administration and Agriculture also decided to launch a national food security programme.
Officials highlighted the need to accurately identify suitable crops for cultivation in each area.
The President also instructed the youth to prioritise agriculture to achieve greater productivity and to plan for higher yields through new technology.
Also speaking at the meeting, Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs and Local Government Dinesh Gunawardena said they are looking at an initiative to include Friday as a holiday for the state sector, considering the prevailing fuel crisis.
As an alternative, the Minister said state sector officers will be assigned to Agriculture and home gardening initiatives in their home towns.
He commented that state sector employees staying home is not the solution to the crisis.
Minister Gunawardena also spoke on the planned developments in Information technology to facilitate state sector employees working from home.
