The Samagi Jana Balawegaya has accused the Head of State of breaking his pledge to the public to re-enact provisions of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
Speaking during a media briefing, SJB General Secretary Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara claimed the 22nd Constitutional Amendment will further increase the powers vested with the President.
MP Madduma Bandara said the public continuously called for the tyrannical governance to come to an end by bringing back the 19th Amendment.
The Parliamentarian said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa addressing the nation on the 11th of May claimed he will reenact provisions of the 19th Amendment and abolish the Executive Presidency.
He however said the new Constitutional Amendment tabled by the government does not facilitate the claims.
The MP said the 22nd Amendment grants the Head of State the authority to oust the Prime Minister and also hold Ministerial portfolios as opposed to the provisions contained in the 19th Amendment.
On a separate note, MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara claimed Chief Prelates have rejected the present administration.
He said Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe has misled the Chief Prelates as the 22nd Amendment was not the draft presented to the Chief Prelates.
The MP said this was a ploy by the Head of State to continue to remain in power.
He said as a result the Chief Prelates have called for the formation of an all-party government.
