President Gotabaya Rajapaksa says it is important that all countries work towards for the betterment of the planet by reducing greenhouse gas emission and implementing methods of renewable energy generation.
Speaking at the United Nations High-Level Dialogue on Energy which was held parallel to the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly the President stressed on the importance of moving towards renewable energy in order to minimise harmful effects of climate change.
The theme of this year’s energy summit is to accelerate action on clean, affordable energy for all and to ensure continuous power supply.
President Rajapaksa revealed that Sri Lanka plans to reach its target of supplying 70% of its power demand through renewable energy sources by 2030 and make the country carbon free by 2050.
The President also welcomed foreign investors to invest in the project to construct 7,000 solar power generation plants around the island adding that Sri Lanka will accept any investments by foreign entities to further its renewable energy goals.
