Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa has challenged the government to present in Parliament the compensation plan for farmers whose harvests were reduced due to crop damage.
The Opposition Leader said the Opposition was ready to support an acceptable form of compensation.
However, MP Premadasa said he will not support any programme that provides a meagre compensation fee.
Samagi Govijana Manifesto was launched this morning under the patronage of MP Premadasa adjacent to the Parakrama Samudraya in Polonnaruwa.
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya said the Manifesto includes matters related to the development of agriculture, uplifting farmers’ economic status, and methods used for future agriculture purposes.
Several leaders in the farming community attended the programme.
Sajith Premadasa added the SJB is prepared to hold peaceful protests if farmers do not receive adequate compensation.
He said a Budgetary allocation was not made for the payment of compensation regardless of the many Cabinet proposals that have been put forth.
Premadasa requested the government to refrain from deceiving farmers and threatening their livelihoods and to instead uplift farmers.
