The Court of Appeal today informed that the verdict pertaining to the appeal filed by three defendants including Parliamentarian Premalal Jayasekara, seeking their acquittal and release from the death sentence imposed by the Ratnapura High Court will be announced on the 31st of March.

The Attorney General filed indictments against Parliamentarian Premalal Jayasekara and two others over the murder of an individual and injuring two others during an attack on a political rally of then common candidate Maithripala Sirisena in Kahawatte during the 2015 Presidential Election.

Announcing the verdict in the case, the Ratnapura High Court convicted the defendants and sentenced them to death on the 31st of July 2020.

The defendants filed appeals before the Court of Appeal challenging the decision and are calling for their acquittal.

Accordingly, after the consideration of the petitions, the Court of Appeal ordered that the verdict be announced on the 31st of March.
