Minister of Tourism Prasanna Ranatunga claims not only Sri Lanka but even major international powers are facing a food crisis at present, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minister Ranatunga said through the next Budget they have taken measures to address the situation by giving priority to local produce and through the strengthening of the country’s economy.
Speaking to media in Minuwangoda today, Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said even countries like the United Kingdom and Germany are facing similar issues.
He said since Sri Lanka depends on other nations for several commodities, any issues in such countries will have a bigger bearing locally.
The Minister said however plans have been formulated to increase local production, develop the rural economy and produce all essential commodities.
Meanwhile, Minister Ranatunga claimed that due to the present fertiliser crisis, the country will not endure a food shortage.
He also noted that due to the fertiliser shortage, instead of a food crisis, fewer number of people will suffer from kidney-related issues.
