The Colombo High Court today sentenced Minister Prasanna Ranatunga to a two year rigorous imprisonment, suspended for five years, over intimidating an individual and extortion over a land dispute.
The order was issued by Colombo High Court judge Manjula Thilakarathne this afternoon (6).
Court also imposed a Rs.25 million fine on Minister Ranatunga and informed that the failure to pay the sum will result in an additional nine month prison sentence.
Minister Ranatunga was also ordered to pay Rs.1 million in compensation to the first witness of the aggrieved party and informed that the failure to pay the compensation will result in the sum being charged as a fine and an additional three month prison sentence.
The verdict was issued over the 13th indictment in the case; intimidating a businessman in 2015 and extorting more than Rs.37 million in promissory notes.
Minister Ranatunga’s wife and a relative of the wife who were cited as defendants were released from the charges.
Court also acquitted Minister Prasanna Ranatunga from the other indictments apart from the 13th indictment.
