The Ministry of Power has requested the Criminal Investigation Department to conduct an investigation into yesterday’s island-wide power outage.
Minister of Power Gamini Lokuge said they directed the complaint after reports emerged that yesterday’s power outage was a result of an act of sabotage.
Power cuts were reported from several areas a few days ago as well.
The Ministry of Power said due to a breakdown in the transmission lines an island-wide power outage was reported at around 11.45am yesterday.
The power supply was disrupted for nearly five hours in some areas.
Meanwhile, following the incident all three generators of the Norochcholai Power Plant have been dysfunctional.
The Ministry said they are hoping to reactivate one of the generators and add it to the national grid with the day.
A senior spokesperson of the Ministry informed NewsRadio that it will take up to two weeks to fully restore services of the Norochcholai Power Plant.
Therefore, electricity will be supplied in a controlled manner.
Accordingly, the public has been warned that power cuts could be imposed to several areas intermittently during the next few days.
