Former President Maithripala Sirisena says a tragedy that has never occurred in the history of Sri Lanka, is currently taking place.
The former President issuing a statement said a small group of individuals, who are power hungry, are working towards destroying the country.
Sirisena said state governance relates to ensuring public safety and the country’s security.
The former President added asserting one’s personal power is not the solution to the issues the country’s people are facing.
He noted that in the country’s history, power hungry individuals have led the country to destruction adding that he curtailed this power in 2015 with the passing of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
However, the former President said in 2019 with power being vested with the President once again, the country was led to further destruction.
Former President Sirisena said enforcing the emergency law to suppress the public engaged in a democratic struggle and the imposition of curfew only in the Western Province is a shameless and short-sighted effort to suppress justice, and condemned this move.
The former President said it is the responsibility of the security forces to protect the public and the country.
Former President Sirisena also requested the Commanders of the tri forces and the Inspector General of Police to refrain from attacking youth engaged in the unarmed struggle and urged that they not take up arms.
He noted that the President and the acting President have no mandate and requested that they think twice when executing directives.
He also urged the public to refrain from damaging public property.
The Former President said the President and the Prime Minister must resign and bow to the will of the people.
