The All Ceylon Poultry Traders Association has attributed the increase in prices of eggs in the local market to difficulties in importing animal feed required for the production process.
At present the price of an average sized egg in the market is over Rs.40.
Egg producers claim under the current circumstances, they are unable to continue production activities.
President of the Association Ajith H. Gunasekara said the price increase in eggs is not done voluntarily adding that they are unable to maintain a production line.
He said eggs require 73 percent of animal feed adding that animal feed ingredients are high in price.
He said they are unable to source local ingredients for animal feed especially corn.
Gunasekera claimed that other essentials for animal feed have not been imported for more than four months.
He noted that discussions were held with the government in March and requests were made to make dollars available for the necessary imports to purchase raw materials.
He stated that Rs.30 million should be made available in the least monthly for importers to ensure production lines can continue.
