The Lawyers for Democracy organisation says many positive aspects within the 19th Amendment to the Constitution are not included within the 22nd Amendment.
Speaking to NewsRadio Convenor of the organisation Attorney Lal Wijenayake said this is contradictory to the people’s mandate.
He said the people have been deceived by the government through a Constitutional Amendment much less effective compared to the 19th Amendment.
Wijenayake said the people’s expectations on reducing the President’s powers have not been represented in the 22nd Amendment.
He claimed this process has become a power struggle by the President, to hold on to power.
Wijenayake called on the government to re-enact provisions of the 19th Amendment.
