The All Ceylon Farmers’ Federation says the statements made by certain political groups calling to cultivate crops at homes when the government does not provide the necessary facilities for cultivation are humorous to society.
The National Organiser of the Federation Namal Karunaratne speaking to NewsRadio responded to the recent statement made by the Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardana urging the public to cultivate several crops in their own backyards.
Karunaratne said making such statements at a time when the prices of vegetables and seeds have increased cannot be taken seriously.
He said the public including the farming community is amused at claims made by the Trade and Agriculture Ministers as they make various statements at various points of time.
He said Minister Gunawardana who once claimed a single family can survive with Rs.2,500 is now urging the public to cultivate crops in the face of an impending food shortage.
The National Organiser said merely planting seeds will not yield any crops as it needs the relevant fertilisers.
He added pesticides and weedicides are also to obtain a decent harvest.
Karunaratne urged the present administration to provide necessary facilities instead of making empty promises.
He said the country’s agriculture industry did not survive this far on the advice of politicians.
