The Samagi Jana Balawegaya claims regulations of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka do not allow for a Member of Parliament to function as its Governor.
Speaking to media over speculations that State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabraal will take up the vacant post of Central Bank Governor, Parliamentarian Eran Wickremeratne said no new appointments could be made to the post until the cooling off period is served prior to a new appointment is announced.
Prof. WD Lakshman announced that he will be stepping down as the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka prior to his retirement, due to incidents and certain matters that unfolded in the week prior to the announcement.
Meanwhile, several government sources have indicated that State Minister of Money & Capital Market and State Enterprise Reforms Ajith Nivard Cabraal will be re-appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank.
MP Wickremeratne said the Central Bank must be an independent entity that is void of political bias and affiliations.
