The JVP has questioned the government’s purpose of imposing quarantine curfew that is being enforced in varying levels to different segments of society.
Politburo member of the JVP Former Parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti speaking at an event this afternoon said the coronavirus infection rate rose due to ineffective lockdowns adding that the time lapsed since imposing curfew would have been sufficient in mitigating the virus.
Handunnetti said, however, due to the lack of stringent procedures and political interventions, led to a failure in mitigating the spread of the virus.
He said it is evident that the travel restrictions were not effective as expected.
The Former MP commenting on the decision to appoint Ajith Nivard Cabraal once again as the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka said the move poses a threat to the independence of the Central Bank.
Handunnetti said a politician has no right to hold the position of the Governor as it creates a conflict of interest.
He added there are serious allegations against Ajith Nivard Cabraal including the loss of Rs.9 billion incurred by the Employees’ Provident Fund during his previous tenure as the Governor.
The former MP also said a relative of Ajith Nivard Cabraal was employed at Perpetual Treasuries Limited, which was involved in the controversial bond auctions during his term as Governor.
