The Institute for Democratic Reforms and Electoral Studies or IRES says many issues prevalent today stem from the political instability in the country.
Executive Director Manjula Gajanayake speaking to NewsRadio regarding the present political situation in the country said reforms that should take place in the electoral system are yet to materialise.
He said the seriousness of the economic crisis is being felt at present, adding that political reforms that are taking place however are not commendable.
Gajanayake said prompt reforms have not been taken yet, especially pertaining to the 21st Amendment to the Constitution by the political leadership.
He claimed the 21st Amendment can swiftly curtail powers of the President and vest more power with Parliament.
However, Manjula Gajanayake charged that the Minister of Justice and the Prime Minister are engaged in efforts to protect the President.
He noted that the people’s hopes in the 21st Amendment have therefore diminished.
