Secretary of Defence Kamal Gunaratne says the Police and the security forces are vested with powers to use necessary force against those endangering or harming the public by engaging in anti-social activity, that also causes damage to property.
The Defence Secretary said the law will be strictly enforced against individuals disrupting public life and causing damage to public or private property.
The Defence Secretary urged all citizens to act with restraint during these trying times, and to refrain from engaging in any unlawful activity.
Gunaratne requested the public to extend their support to the security forces who are committed to protecting the country and its people.
The Defence Secretary said within a democratic framework, any individual can engage in peaceful protests and express dissent adding that the government upholds and respects this right.
However, Kamal Gunaratne said according to information received, attempts are underway to engage in violence under the pretence of protests, adding that such intentions by certain groups will also incite violence among the general public similar to the events reported on the 9th of May across the island.
He called on the public to act patiently and to refrain from being rash and to uphold the law without disrupting day to day lives of the public.
