Police have fired tear gas at a protest march organized by a group of HND students in Colombo, Fort today.
Earlier today the Colombo Fort Magistrates Court issued a Court order imposing certain restrictions on a protest march conducted by a group of Higher National Diploma students.
The order states that protestors cannot forcefully enter or attack government offices and departments and official residences of the government within the Colombo Fort Police division.
The order also noted that protesters must refrain from disrupting police officers on duty, while refraining from acts of violence or vandalism.
The court order was issued based on a request made by the Officer in Charge of the Colombo Fort Police station over the Convenor of the student body, its members and protestors at the scene.
Court also restricted protestors from entering or moving towards certain roads including the road from the NSM roundabout to Chaithya Rd, or Janadhipathi Mawatha, Ceramic Street to York Street, Bank road, lower Chatham Street, the main road opposite the Grand Oriental Hotel, Layden Bastian Rd, Sir Baron Jayathilake road, Mudalige road, Hospital Street and Canal road.
