Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha thera says Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has indicated that he is prepared to step down, if Parliament is informed by the opposition on the next course of action to create stability in the country.
Speaking after holding discussions with Prime Minister Rajapaksa, Omalpe Sobhitha thera said the Premier had said a political vacuum will be created if a government steps down adding any delays to re-appoint a new administration could lead to violence.
The thera said they had indicated that the country can function under the President and his powers, even if there is no Prime Minister for a short time period.
Omalpe Sobhitha thera noted however Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is of the view that without a Premier and a government, the country will not be stable.
Sobhitha thera said therefore the Prime Minister has claimed that the opposition by rallying all groups in Parliament should present its proposal on steps it will take after the resignation of the present government.
