The draft of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution was presented to the Cabinet of Ministers yesterday.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said the draft will be distributed amongst party leaders for their observations, which is expected to be discussed on Friday (27).
The draft will subsequently be presented for final approval once again to the Cabinet of Ministers.
The draft, compiled by Minister of Justice Wijedasa Rajapakshe, was presented to the Cabinet following a meeting of the constitutional amendment drafting committee last evening at the Prime Minister’s office.
Following observations of party leaders, amendments, if any, will be included in the draft and tabled once again at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers.
Subsequent to further discussion, the draft will be presented in Parliament and will be gazetted.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said they intend on passing the 21st Amendment to the Constitution with the support of all individuals.
The Premier added in the event of any objections petitions can be filed before the Supreme Court subsequent to the draft being gazetted.
The draft of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution includes limiting powers vested with the Executive President, preventing dual citizenship holders from holding posts within Parliament, among several others.
