Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has issued directives to immediately release all consignments of essential commodities that are being held at the Colombo Port, at present.
During today’s Cost of Living Committee meeting the orders were issued to the Import and Export Controller and the Director General of Customs.
Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa has directed Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardena to take steps to release such stocks to the market without any shortage through Lanka Sathosa outlets and through importers of essential items.
During the meeting it was reaffirmed that it is the duty of the Ministries of Trade and Agriculture to supply essential commodities such as rice to the public without any shortage.
Meanwhile, Minister Badula Gunawardena had requested the Prime Minister to take steps to expedite the complaint he had lodged over claims made by the former Executive Director of the Consumer Affairs Authority before his resignation.
Accordingly the Prime Minister had notified the matter to the Inspector General of Police.
