Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the adoption of the Sri Lanka Electricity (Amendment) Bill will ensure cost effective renewable energy to the national grid.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the Bill is an important step forward in ensuring low-cost energy for Sri Lankans.
The Sri Lanka Electricity Bill was passed in Parliament this evening.
The Bill tabled by Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera will enable authorities to push through renewable energy projects despite the opposition of certain trade unions.
Minister Wijesekera said the Bill is essential for Sri Lanka to initiate low-cost power generation projects in future.
The opposition said however the move is an attempt to bypass regulations which will result in more corruption in the country.
Subject Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said the amendment merely removed a legal barrier that existed since 2013 adding that the amendment has been welcomed by all stakeholders other than a few trade unions.
