Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has admitted that those who voted for the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna are now facing a difficult situation.
Addressing the fifth National Convention of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna held at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre in Colombo today, Prime Minister Rajapaksa said the government will be blamed and criticised by the public even if they are not at fault during such difficult times.
The Prime Minister said government members must continue to interact with the voters irrespective of current public sentiment.
Prime Minister Rajapaksa said he visited sites terrorists carried out attacks including Kebithigollewa, Beruwala and Aluthgama and embraced both the public’s cries and blame while he was in power adding he also visited 2019 Easter Sunday attack sites even before representatives of the government arrived.
On a separate note, Prime Minister Rajapaksa claimed they never caused panic or created chaos among the people and led any strike actions while the SLPP was in the opposition.
He said the racially motivated riots in Digana and the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks occurred during the time they were forming the SLPP while in the opposition.
He said their knowledge of the past assisted in ensuring and maintaining peace among the public.
The Prime Minister said they never attempted to create chaos even when they were facing legal action.
Prime Minister Rajapaksa said this was the main reason the public accepted the SLPP as a responsible political party.
The Prime Minister claimed that the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna is a party which supports unity. Prime Minister Rajapaksa said all parties must work together towards a common goal.
He said the trait was inherited from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party adding the SLFP always stood with leftist political parties.
The Prime Minister said the SLPP must consider this adding even if certain parties do not have Parliamentary representation; what is important is the common goal.
He said these parties were with them during difficult times adding they cannot be sidelined.
