The National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol says the percentage of men addicted to tobacco has decreased from 15 percent since 2015, to 9.01 percent at present.
Chairman of the Authority Dr. Samadhi Rajapaksa addressing a media briefing at the Government Information Department said total tobacco consumption in the country has reduced from 45.7 percent in 2015, to 36.2 percent as of today.
Dr. Rajapaksa said 60 males succumb to tobacco related illnesses daily.
Dr. Rajapaksa said tobacco use leads to untimely deaths with eight million deaths reported world-wide.
He claimed this is far worse than the coronavirus pandemic.
