Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith warns that people will take to the streets in protest against the government if action is not taken against the destruction of the environment.
The Cardinal said the government must take immediate steps to seek legal action before the International Criminal Court to address the damages caused by the X-Press Pearl wreck.
The Cardinal speaking during an observational visit of the Sarakkuwa coastal area to investigate the damage caused to the coastal environment said the government must fulfil its responsibilities adding that they must make necessary demands.
The Archbishop said the shipping company, insurance personnel, and the local agent must ensure that Sri Lanka receives the compensation that is due and must not shun away from responsibility.
The Cardinal stated the President must take steps to protect and uphold the country’s independence and sovereignty.
His Eminence added the government’s approach to the Muthurajawela Forest Reserve cannot be condoned adding that they will have to bring people to the streets against such decisions against the President and the government.
