The JVP claims the general public has to bear the burden of the present government’s ill-advised and incorrect economic policies.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Chief Secretary of the JVP Tilvin Silva said, the prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed due to the economic mismanagement.
Tilvin Silva said the present government promised wholesale changes in the country and pledged to provide relief to the people.
He said the public granted an overwhelming mandate to the present administration due to promises it made during the past two elections.
Tilvin Silva said now however the people cannot afford to purchase essential items such as rice and coconut. He said a kilogram of rice which was at Rs. 80 to Rs. 90 is now over Rs. 110 to Rs. 120.
The Chief Secretary of the JVP said prices of all essential items including rice, coconut, soap, toothpaste and biscuit have risen sharply.
He said although the government has issued multiple gazettes and raided mills, the price of rice has not come down.
Tilvin Silva said despite economic issues, no country has allowed the business owners to increase the prices of essential commodities and staples.
He said however the present administration which has Executive Powers, two thirds majority power in Parliament and additional powers through the 20th constitutional amendment has failed to control the price of rice.
Tilvin Silva said the public who had to deal with the coronavirus crisis, has been burdened further due to price increases.
Commenting on new regulations imposed by the Central Bank pertaining to the importation of products, Tilvin Silva said even basic items including clothing items have been restricted.
He said although the government has no shame and does not require any clothes after failing in all avenues, citizens need clothes.
Tilvin Silva said strict restrictions alone cannot resolve the current crisis.
He said the people and the country are facing the current crisis since the government has not implemented a stringent economic policy.
