The government says the impending Provincial Council elections cannot be held this year.
Speaking during the weekly Cabinet media briefing today, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said due to the Provincial Council Elections Bill tabled in 2017, there are several complications.
The Minister said the President last week had also indicated the need to amend the existing Provincial Council Elections Bill and therefore steps will be taken to introduce a new legislation.
Minister Dullas Alahapperuma noted that he cannot provide a timeline as to when the impending elections will be held.
Meanwhile, the government says India has not imposed any conditions related to conducting the Provincial Council elections this year to grant a loan to purchase fuel until January.
Cabinet Spokesman Minister Alahapperuma said certain conditions have been imposed to issue the loan but India has not demanded the conduct of the Provincial Council elections this year.
When questioned by media that India has demanded the government to conduct the election before the end of the year, the Minister said there is no basis to the claim.
