Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has advised the Prisons Department and the Urban Development Authority to pay special attention to female inmates and children during the relocation of the Welikada Prison to Millewa, Horana.
The Welikada Prison complex is due to be relocated to a 200 acre land in Millewa, Horana.
Officials of the Urban Development Authority and the Prisons Department have informed the Prime Minister that the Rs.30 billion project will be completed by 2024.
The Welikada Prison complex in Borella spans over 40 acres while the Urban Development Authority has already planned to set aside the Chapel Ward and the Prisons Headquarters building for a hotel project.
State Minister Lohan Ratwatte said 35 acres of the property will be allocated for other investments with several investors having already expressed interest in launching projects.
Prime Minister Rajapaksa also instructed officials of the Urban Development Authority to extend invitations to other investors in addition to those who have already expressed interest.
Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said the Magazine Prison will be relocated first followed by the other prison complexes in Millewa adding that the Welikada gallows will also be relocated to Horana.
