The party leader’s have decided to request both President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to resign.
Parliamentarian Rauff Hakeem, taking to Twitter said under such a circumstance the Speaker of House will take over as a temporary President according to the Constitution.
However, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has informed the party leaders that he is willing to resign as Prime Minister and make way for an all-party government to take over.
The Premier has informed that he is taking this decision in view of the fact that island-wide fuel distribution is due to recommence this week, the World Food Programme Director is due to visit the country this week, while the debt sustainability report for the IMF is due to be finalised shortly.
The Prime Minister said in order to ensure the safety of citizens, he agreed to the recommendation by the Opposition party leader’s.
A discussion of the party leader’s took place at Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana’s residence this evening.
Several leaders including Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, leader of the JVP Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and MP MA Sumanthiran of the Tamil National Alliance joined the meeting via Zoom.
MP Hakeem said party leader’s decided to immediately agree to forming an all party government.
The MP said several concerns arose adding that other alternatives are being discussed.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe summoned the emergency party leaders meeting to discuss the present situation in the country and to arrive at a swift resolution.
Premier Wickremesinghe also requested Speaker of the House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to summon Parliament promptly.
