An adjournment debate was held in Parliament yesterday regarding the decision to relocate the Professors Unit of the Medical Faculty of the Wayamba University to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital premises.
The proposal tabled in this regard by Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Nalin Bandara was seconded by government MP Anura Priyadharshana Yapa.
Although a decision was reached previously to establish the Professors Unit of the Wayamba University at the Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital, a decision has now been reached to move it to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
MP Bandara said it is not advisable to change such decisions when a new government is appointed.
He said the government must provide a solution to the issue which has created unnecessary complications in the system.
He said such decisions should not be politicized or taken to further the interest of a few individuals.
During the debate several government MPs also opposed the decision which has led to a crisis.
MP Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said the decision must be reversed.
He said the University Grants Commission which is responsible for the units has not requested to relocate it from Kuliyapitiya to Kurunegala.
MP Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said he is hopeful that the government will take an appropriate decision.
He also claimed that the matter is not a political decision but has been pushed by a trade union.
Speaking during the debate MP Charitha Herath said a majority of the government leaders are unaware of the decision to relocate the Professors Unit of the Medical Faculty of the Wayamba University to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
He said although all public representatives want to work for their constituents, it should not jeopardize the future of the country.
MP Charitha Herath stressed that a prompt solution must be given to the issue, even if it goes against the interests of certain government members or their affiliates.
Making her closing remarks of the debate State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control Sudarshini Fernandopulle said the University Grants Commission is also of the stance that the Professors Unit of the Wayamba University must remain at the Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital.
However State Minister Fernandopulle said Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella has informed he is prepared to establish a Professors Unit at both the Kuliyapitiya and Kurunegala Teaching Hospitals in this matter.
The State Minister said decisions are taken to uplift the health and education sectors and therefore the government will arrive at an appropriate decision regarding the matter.
