Parliament was adjourned today by Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene till the 17th of May.
Parliament adjourned for ten minutes today after a tense situation broke out over Police firing tear gas at protesters of the Inter University Students Federation this afternoon at the Parliament Roundabout.
MP Hesha Withanage who was the chair at the time, adjourned parliament for ten minutes, due to a heated situation that arose when the Opposition called on the Speaker to be present in his seat, in order to take action against police inhumanely beating up protestors at the Parliament Roundabout.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Harin Fernando warned that the Speaker would be confined to his home, if the government does not provide a solution to the country’s already reducing reserves.
SJB MPs also visited the Speaker’s chamber after the ten minute adjournment, and continued in a heated debate.
Opposition MPs also stressed on the importance of holding a parliament debate on the no-confidence motion.
Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena upon resuming the sittings informed Parliament that a report will be called from the Inspector General of Police regarding Police firing tear gas.
