Election watchdog, the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections says the recent statement by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa that if an interim government is formed in future, it will be under his leadership is a clear indication that the present administration is unwilling to listen to the demands of the protesting youth and the general public.
Speaking to media in Kandy, Executive Director of PAFFREL Rohana Hettiarachchi said thousands of youth, trade union members and artists have called for the resignation of the government.
He said political parties and leaders should be mindful that through elections, public sentiments are expressed.
Rohana Hettiarachchi noted that they are not requesting any parties to violate the Constitution but to work within constitutional provisions while listening to the calls of the public.
He also emphasised the need for a united opposition and called for a common programme to be implemented to overcome the current crisis in the country.
The Executive Director of PAFFREL said at present opposition parties are also working to further their respective political interests.
