Election monitoring body the People’s Action for a Free and Fair Election has commended the government for granting the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers, to draft amendments to the laws governing election expenses.

PAFFREL is hopeful that laws and regulations regarding the amendment of the electoral system, the limitations on expenditure and the restriction of expenditure on political parties will be passed in Parliament in the near future.

Speaking to NewsRadio, PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi said the government expects a stringent programme in this regard in the months ahead.

Hettiarachchi said a collective of organisations including PAFFREL and the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence prepared the preliminary draft in 2015.

Hettiarachchi said another draft was compiled by the National Election Commission.

He also emphasised the importance of a mechanism to monitor and review expenditure.
