The Teachers’ and Principals’ Trade Union Alliance says over 240,000 teachers and 16,000 principals are expected to participate in the mass trade union action scheduled for tomorrow.

Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Venerable Yalwala Pagngnasekara thera said all state, private, and semi-government sectors, farmers, estate workers and labourers will engage in tomorrow’s 24-hour token strike.

The thera said non-academic staff will also join the trade union action. Pagngnasekara Thera said the trade union action is demanding the immediate resignation of the Head of State and the government.

The thera said the present administration has failed to manage the country’s finances while corruption is rampant.

Pagngnasekara Thera said the country is also facing political turmoil in addition to the economic crisis.

Joining the media briefing, the Chief Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union Joseph Stalin said they engaged in an island wide trade union action with the participation of all teachers, principals and teaching instructors on the 25th of April demanding the present administration to step down immediately.

He said a majority of the teachers in the education sector joined the trade union action calling for the government to step down.

Stalin said they warned that a mass trade union action will be held tomorrow with the participation of all sectors if the government fails to reach a decision within the week.

He said they are going ahead with the trade union action since the government failed to take any action.
