The opposition claims it will take to the streets if the government attempts to remain in power without a mandate.
Reports pertaining to a move to extend the current term of the President by two years have been widely discussed at present.
When inquired by NewsRadio, Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake said the government is attempting to arbitrarily grab power from the people.
MP Attanayake said a mandate is given by the public through constitutional provisions and public representatives are bound by it.
He said there are no provisions in the Sri Lankan Constitution for persons to arbitrarily extend the terms of the President and Parliament due to a pandemic or any other economic or global issues.
MP Tissa Attanayake said terms can be extended by a public referendum.
He said if a faction is keen to serve the public then they can carry out their programmes during the next three years and seek a fresh mandate.
Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake therefore reiterated their strong objection to any moves to grab power through arbitrary actions.
